Is being mid-late 20s too old to train for West End musical theatre?
I was actually in a similar position once upon a time. I started out my career thinking I wanted to be an opera singer, and studied it in school. Then I got my first residency with an opera company and realized that it was absolutely not for me. When I made the transition to musical theater, I found that my opera training helped open doors for me that likely shouldn’t have been opened for me simply because of the weird (and usually unintentional) snobbery that surrounds old-school classical voice training. And when I started getting some real work I was shocked at how little so many working professionals know about music theory and the like, and being able to do things like sight-read complicated pieces really set me apart. Of course, I made the decision when I was in my early 20’s, and men have a bit less of a premium on youth than women have, and I’m also living and working in the US, so her situation is likely pretty different.
