Insurance generally does not cover breast augmentation procedures which are performed for purely cosmetic purposes. Some amount of coverage may be available when treating a congenital deformity or reconstructing the breast after mastectomy. Patients should be sure to check with their own insurance companies.

When surgeries are performed for medical reasons, such as excessive hooding of the upper eyelids, impaired vision, and breast reduction, insurance may cover part of the cost of the procedure. Breast augmentation is typically not covered by insurance when performed for cosmetic reasons only. Some coverage may be available when treating a congenital deformity or reconstructing the breast. In Australia Breast Augmentation is considered a purely cosmetic procedure and as such it is not otherwise covered by your medical insurance company. There are exceptions to this rule under medicare; such as, Tuberous breast corrective surgery, following a mastectomy and subsequent reconstructive augmentation, removal and replacement of Breast Implants for reasons of capsular contracture and scarring.
Medicare typically will ask for proof of the underlying disease or deformity to justify funding breast augmentation surgery.
