Is calligraphy hard to learn?
Yes, go for it. I had pretty dreadful handwriting as a young teenager and I got myself a book about Italic which helped no end. I learnt a bit of calligraphy later with the Celtic half uncials which are very easy to do, I’ve never gone too much for the Gothic. You may also find it helps your drawing ability. You don’t necessarily need a kit, only a book or some printouts, and some pens. You can practise on lined paper but it’s more satisfying to use one of those sheets with the thick black lines which you put under plain paper and they show through. You can make your own with a ruler and a black marker. Just one little tip, it’s good to practise with wide nibbed pens, because you hold the pen at different angles for different styles. Wide nibbed pens though use an awful lot of ink, but I’ve found that you can do some supplementary cheaper practice by taping two pencils or the insides of biros together, yes really!
