Is Chromium Picolinate Safe for Pregnant Women?

0

Chromium picolinate in prenatal vitamins is probably safe (and beneficial) for most pregnant women. However, you should not take any additional chromium picolinate. For pregnant women, only about 30 mcg of chromium is recommended per day. Most chromium picolinate supplements (other than those found in multivitamins or prenatal vitamins) contain way more than the recommended amount. It is not known if these high doses are safe for pregnant women. There is some evidence that chromium picolinate (but not other forms of chromium) may cause free-radical damage to the DNA within the cells, which could be especially dangerous for a developing fetus.
