Is Curt Schilling on a pace to break the major league record for complete games in a season?
Stephanie Williams, Havertown, Pa. Don’t count on it, Stephanie. While Schilling recorded his third straight complete game and major league-leading fourth this season Monday at Montreal, the Phils’ ace would need at least 44 more starts — and complete them all — in order to match the big league record for just the 20th century. In 1904, New York Yankees pitcher “Happy” Jack Chesbro started 51 games and completed 48. Incidentally, Happy hurled 454 2/3 innings and had a record of 41-12. Schilling appeared in only 35 games both in 1997 and ’98.
