In an excellent study of the level of Bone Morphogenic Protein (BMP) growth factor in demineralized bone matrix, researchers found HUGE variability between lots of DBM from the same manufacturer as well as miniscule, likely non-therapeutic amounts of BMP in all DBM products. The researchers (Drs. Kanim, Bao, Zhao, Delmarter and Dawson of Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California) tested three lots of DBM product from each of the major suppliers. They found huge differences in the amount of BMP growth factor between lots. The three products with the highest degree of variability were Allomatrix (Wright Medical), Grafton Gel (Osteotech) and Osteofil Paste (Regeneration). The products had a stunning 74-76% coefficient of variation; meaning that there was essentially NO consistency between lots. The DBM with the most consistency between lots was Dynagraft from ISOTIS (GenSci) at 16-32% CV. Panelists and surgeons attending the presentation speculated that the supplier’s process
