Diamonds may in fact be either opaque, transparent, or translucent. Diamonds have a very high index of refraction, meaning that incoming light rays are diffracted through all crystal faces, producing a high brilliance and dispersion that is characteristic of a diamond. As such, diamonds suitable for jewelery are transparent; however as I mentioned before they may be either. Some diamonds may have such a low clarity producing such a low dispersion that they may be translucent, with a frosted appearance or worse completely opaque. The low clarity to opaque diamonds are typically used for industrial purposes as abrasives. Opaque diamonds are almost always black and never fancy colored gems.
