Is Digits Backward a better Working Memory task than Digits Forward?
Digit Span Forward and Digit Span Backward tap distinct but highly interdependent neurocognitive functions. Digit Span Forward primarily taps short-term auditory memory while Digit Span Backward measures the child’s ability to manipulate verbal information while in temporary storage. Digit Span Forward is a precursor ability to Digit Span Backward for normally developing children. The separate scores allow practitioners to evaluate possible dissociation of these functions in disordered populations.
