Depends which part of the Northeast you mean. Some parts of Central and Northern Maine are already well past peak foliage season by the end of September. For Southern New Hampshire and Eastern Massachusetts, the best time is the second and third weeks of October. You have to move a good 15-20 miles inland because the foliage along the immediate coasts is not so noticeable at that time of year. Fall is beautiful in New England for scenery and weather, but it’s my least favorite season because the days are getting shorter and you know that winter is on the way… I prefer spring.
