I'd get him world tour. World tour gives you more options as you can play the guitar, drums, bass or vocals. On guitar hero 3 you can only play bass and guitar. World tour picks up on all of guitar hero 3's flaws, so it's more up-to-date. And World Tour allows you to create your own songs and play in a band online. I'm sure he'd appreciate World Tour more.
