There are obvious similarities when considering Hamad al Humaidhan and Picasso, most strikingly their prodigious artistic ability in youth. They were ten years old when their talent became recognised. While Hamad’s art can be described as Abstract, Cubism is a complex term incorporating three distinct definitions: analytical, hermetic and synthetic. As a movement it formed a conspicuous detachment from the atmospheric effects of Impressionism. Devoid of troubling subject matter, Hamad’s work relies on the viewer to infuse meaning, it does not menace or comment on contemporaneous events or conflicts. This could be attributed to his young age and lack of experience – Picasso had after all witnessed the brutalities of two World War’s and a Civil War in his native Spain represented in his 1937 work, Guernica.
