The rare condition is known clinically as internal decapitation, and it left her with no control over her head. Surgeons said her injuries were different from a broken neck, which usually occurs when vertebrae in the neck are cracked or broken. Internal decapitation describes the rare process by which the skull separates from the spinal column during severe head injury. This injury is often fatal, since it usually involves nerve damage or severance of the spinal cord. There have been several survivors of the injury. The most recent was Jon Wilhite of Manhattan Beach, California who received the same injury in a vehicular collision on April 9, 2009 which included the death of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Nick Adenhart. Jon Wilhite survived the injury. Sources: http://en.wikipedia.
