Is it necessary to switch to a new refrigerant with the new high-efficiency air conditioners?

Not yet. However, manufacturers will stop selling air conditioners containing R-22 (a.k.a Freon) refrigerant after January 2010. At that point, R-22 will still be produced for servicing units. New R-22 manufacture will cease in 2020, however R-22 will be available through recovery and recycling efforts for some time afterwards.
