Is it OK to cut down a peach tree if it gives NO peaches but has green leaves???

That’s sad. My grandfather wanted to cut down one of our trees because, as he said, “it wasn’t doing anything.” It had green leaves, but was a little sickly. My mother told him he couldn’t cut down the tree, so he started watering it instead. The next summer it flowered and gave us more plums than we could eat. We hadn’t even known it was a fruit tree. It still gives us plums every year now.
