Is it possible to learn Linux just by reading books and without a computer?

No. Hands-on practice is extremely important. It is no more possible to become proficient at Linux by just reading about it than it is to become skilled at dentistry or flying an airplane by just reading about it. Besides, most people involved in Linux think that it is a lot more fun to actually do things with computers than it is to just read about it.
