Is it possible to plant out Geranium cuttings without using Root Powder?

The specialist geranium nursery where I buy a lot of my plants (Vernons) recommend using a solution of Vitamin C (ie, a tablet dissolved in a little water) to dip the cuttings in before you plant them, and stirring this solution with a plastic spoon or label, not a metal one. They have found that, in their professional experience, they root better in Vit C than when using hormone rooting powder. I have also found this method to work well. Other things to remember are; use a very well-drained compost by adding horticultural grit or Perlite to John Innes No2 compost; don’t use compost which is based on shredded bark; give them some bottom heat, especially if taking cuttings now, when the weather is colder, so the compost stays warm; don’t cover the cuttings with plastic or anything else, leave them open to the air; keep them damp but don’t over-water them as they will rot if too wet.
