A friend of mine just went to Japan last Oct-Nov and he wasn’t able to use the international roaming feature of SMART. I think it would also be the same for Globe. You see, it’s because Japan has a different frequency/band system so the telecoms here in the Philippines (as of now) aren’t available there yet. If you’re going to stay for long, a month or so, it’s better for you to just rent/buy a prepaid japanese phone from SoftBank (http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/) Believe it or not, they have vending machines in their convenience stores where you could get a cellphone BUT I think it has a lot of requirements. Just visit the link above. Might be easier to keep in touch with your family and friends in the Philippines via email/online chat. Good luck and have fun on your trip.
