Any 5 year old child, girl or boy, should not still be up at that time of night! They should be in bed by 6:30 to 7:00pm at the latest. They are growing and need sleep to achieve this. They need 10 to 12 hours sleep at night at that age. This will also avoid them falling asleep in class while at school. My Wife & I are active Foster Cares, and have been for the past 19 years looking after sibling groups of 3 to 10 year olds totalling 63 at the last count. We have to have routines, and the children require and accept this. 3 to 5 year olds wash or bath at 6:30pm and bed at 7:00pm. 6 to 7 year olds wash or bath at 7:30pm and bed at 8:00pm. 8 to 9 year olds wash or bath at 8:30pm and bed at 9:00pm. 10 year olds and above wash or bath at 9:00pm and bed at 9:30pm. No child, irrespective of age, is allowed to stay up past 9:30 except for special occasions like Christmas or when on holiday. Get your child into a set routine – you will appreciate it – and so will the child.
