Is it safe to take soy lecithin capsules while breast feeding?
As with any supplement or medication, it is prudent to check with your health care provider if you want to take it while pregnant. According to information on the supplement lecithin (choline), it is not recommended during pregnancy. Lecithin is not listed or reviewed in the new PDR for Nutritional Supplements (2001), but it is reviewed at http://www.supplementwatch.com. According to that review: “During pregnancy, choline intake of the mother may influence memory and brain development in the growing infant. Studies on choline and lecithin supplementation clearly show an increase in blood choline levels following supplementation with 1 5 grams of choline (or 5-15 grams of lecithin). Although adequate maternal choline intake has been shown to be important for fetal brain development during pregnancy, dietary sources of choline (eggs and peanuts) are the preferred method of increasing choline intake for pregnant women.
