Is it Safe to Use Bleach Instead of Chlorine in My Pool?
Maintaining a swimming pool can get expensive with all of the various chemicals and treatments needed to keep it sparkling and clean. Instead of those expensive chlorine tablets, many people are instead using household bleach. Types Make sure you use plain bleach that does not have any added scents or thickeners. The label should read 5.25% to 6% sodium hypochlorite, and the remainder should be inert ingredients. Amount A gallon of bleach is equal to 3/4 of a pound of calcium hypochlorite. To add it to your pool, pour directly into the skimmer. Warning Bleach only should only be used to replace chlorine tablets in a pool using a chlorine system. If your pool uses an ionizer or a copper/silver system, do not add bleach. Precautions As always, when working with bleach, wear gloves and make sure it does not splash on your skin or in your eyes.
