Is It Too Late for a Xena Movie?
Campy though it was, the 1995-2001 series Xena: Warrior Princess remains one of the greatest girl-power TV shows of all time, for four reasons: 1. Xena, an ancient hero with a mandate to fight evil, never stopped kicking butt, even in the final season — when she died, was resurrected, and then gave birth. 2. Instead of TV’s typical romantic subplots, the series often focused on the relationships between women, especially the close friendship between Xena and her sidekick Gabrielle (RenĂ©e O’Connor). 3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon credits Xena: Warrior Princess for making his own series’ feminist heroine (immortalized by Sarah Michelle Gellar) possible. 4. The show has the words “Warrior Princess” in the title, for goodness’ sake! Sadly, the show has been largely forgotten by all but the most diehard fans.
