Is it true that there was a security breach involving MasterCard® cards and account numbers?
A. MasterCard® is aware of what appears to have been a potential data compromise within the payment processing systems of Heartland Payment Systems. Heartland issued a news release on January 20, 2009 stating that it had “learned it was the victim of a security breach within its processing system in 2008” and that it had uncovered malicious software in its processing system. According to the company, “no merchant data or cardholder Social Security numbers, unencrypted personal identification numbers (PIN), addresses or telephone numbers were involved in the breach.” However, Heartland also advised cardholders to examine their monthly statements closely and report any suspicious activity to your bank.
