Is melatonin safe for children?

I use this whenever my son is very keyed up and won’t settle down for bed. Only 3-4 drops with his juice and he’s out very quickly, it is so quick sometimes, I wonder if it’s a good idea. I’ve been using it for several months now on occassion and I have noticed no adverse effects. If I don’t use it, he’s his normal, non-sleepy self so for me it’s been very helpful. I wouldn’t recommend using it every day, but I’ve discovered when I’m having a hard time with no show of relief in the near future, it’s been a lifesaver. I’m about to try purchasing “liquid melatonin” instead of the RemMax, I’m hoping it works just as well. My little boy fights going to sleep (he says special little boys don’t need sleep) I can’t begin to tell you how much this improves his moods in the morning when he has had plenty of sleep. Feel free to contact me with any questions/comments. sharonsmith64@yahoo.com.

A long-term study has assessed the effectiveness and safety of children taking Melatonin. No serious safety concerns were noted in any of the 94 cases studied by means of a structured questionnaire for the parents. Most of the children were followed up after 3.7 years and it was found that long-term medication with Melatonin was effective against sleep onset problems in 88% of the cases.
