Shade ratings are based on the heat produced by incandescent lamps (the technical term for bulbs) – which is normally given as the wattage. Fluorescent lamps work in a different way by exciting a phosphoresent coating rather than burning a filament and so produce considerably less heat. The wattage only really relates (and then only really loosely) to the light output comparisons that are quoted as equivalents to conventional lamps and not heat – so you could use lamps with a far greater lux level without any risk of damaging (or igniting) the shade.
