Is NEC slowing down BTs 3G launch for Docomo?
Some people are speculating that NEC is dragging its feet on a fix for British Telecommunications so that NTT Docomo will be able to launch 3G services around the same time as BT. BT had to postpone the implementation of UMTS services on the Isle of Man until September because the mobile phones disconnect calls when users are moving. BT Wireless said phonemaker NEC is unable to fix the software that lets handsets transfer connections between radio masts that receive and transmit calls. The phones need to pass calls from one mast to another as users move in and out of range. The problem is the same as the one that forced NTT Docomo to delay their 3G launch. British Telecom, the UK’s second largest phone company, was aiming to be the first to offer faster wireless services in Europe by introducing them on the Isle of Man. IThe company has spent GBP 10 billion buying permits for the services. The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported NEC refused to fix the software bug in time to meet BT’s o
