Make sure you find a vet who is comfortable doing the procedure and has the right tools and know-how to do a good job. The surgery itself is fairly simple, just make sure he is given pain medication afterward so he doesn’t feel the need to chew at his incision. While he is healing, change his bedding to towels, non-fraying fabric, or paper towels, something that won’t cling in pieces to his wound and possibly cause infection. Clean his cage every day to keep the wound from getting infected, and keep a close eye on his condition. Take any toys or levels out of the cage for the first few days to restrict his movement somewhat; if his cage is large you may even want to put him in a smaller cage for at least the first week.
