Is niall the pronounced the same as nyle & nile?
the vast majority of people named Niall pronounce it “nigh-ull,” rhyming with the river Nile. a small number also pronounce it “knee-ull” rhyming with “kneel.” the latter is closer to the old Gaelic pronunciation of the old Gaelic name, NĂ©ill, derived from the Gaelic word for “champion.” as a Niall myself, I can say people–in the US in particular–almost always need to be corrected on pronunciation if they’re reading it, but after that they’re fine, and most also think it’s a cool name. in my own opinion, making it Nyle or Nile kinda gets rid of the heritage behind it for a silly reason, and giving a more common name would be kind of a pity… but maybe it bothers other people with the name more…
