Is Obama scraping the missile shield a good idea?

I think it is idiotic. It somewhat made sense to not have SDI when the USSR was still around. The sheer volume of weapons would have overwhelmed such a system and it was the notion of Mutually Assured Destruction that kept the peace. However, now with 3rd world tin pot dictators having nukes, I think it makes a whole lot of sense. A limited system capable of protecting us from a handful of weapons would be well worth it. Thus, I think it is a BAD idea to scrap it. Even if that is what his supporters want.  more

That would be great. Strategic missile defense is a huge waste of money. Even if it works. Which it probably doesn't. Why? Because it's a defense that, even if it works, will inevitably be overwhelmed by strong opponents, and circumvented by weak ones. That is, nations with large numbers of missiles can simply overwhelm the system. And nations with few missiles will simply deliver their warheads by other means. And this is assuming the system can be made to work as advertised. And further assuming that no nation will ever devise ways of spoofing the system, ways far, far cheaper than the defense itself. It exists solely to funnel public money into the pockets of favored government contractors. It is a Maginot line in space. It is a waste of money, and worse, it is a strategic blunder, which will increase the danger of attacks on the United States.  more
