Is organics a niche market?
If you were alive in the 1970s, you might equate organics as a niche market appealing only to beatnicks and protestors. It ain’t so. Organics is in the process of going mainstream, not only in the USA, but in Europe as well. People are concerned about what’s in the food they eat. Since 1990, organic food sales have increased between 15 and 20 percent annually, totaling nearly $14 billion in the USA in 2005, according to the Organic Trade Association’s 2006 Manufacturers Survey. Total US food sales in 2005 were $557 billion, giving organics a 2.5 percent market share, double its market penetration in 2000.
