Is peanut butter high in chloresterol?
You are right that peanut butter is a high fat food. It should be eaten in moderation, not more than a teaspoon a day. Many brands contain palm oil which is cheaper than other vegetable oils and palm oil is high in cholesterol. Moreover, because palm oil is found in many other products, especially in read-cooked meals and biscuits, you will be getting a large dose if you eat a lot of those as well. If you can, choose those brands that specify the kind of oil used in the peanut butter and avoid those that simple say ‘vegetable oil’. There are other environmental reasons for avoiding palm oil – the rush to produce them in Indonesia and Malaysia has destroyed many virgin jungles and killing a multitude of wildlife and indigenous people such as the Penan people.
