Is preparing a wellhead protection plan more cost effective than treating groundwater contamination?
According to a Minnesota Department of Health report, 26 community water supplies in Minnesota have spent more than $44 million over a 12-year period of time to provide safe and adequate drinking water to their consumers following groundwater contamination of their wells. This report and another U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report conclude it is far more cost effective to prevent contamination through wellhead protection than treating contaminated groundwater.
