Is Raising the Minimum Wage Like Ending Slavery?

Is Raising the Minimum Wage Like Ending Slavery? Sunday January 14, 2007Cheri DiNovo, Ontario MPP (member of Provincial Parliament) believes so. She writes: “Raising wages always costs money to business. That is why slavery was supported. The argument was that ending slavery would bankrupt America. There is no question that ending slavery cost more to some. But the issue of paying people enough to live on is about ethics, not just economics.” One wonders why Ms. DiNovo wants only a $10.00 (Canadian) minimum wage. I’ve lived on $10.00 an hour and it was not fun. Surely $15.00 would be much better. Sure it would cost business money, but remember: slavery! In all seriousness, I support efforts to improve the lot of the least well off on society. I just don’t see any moral, ethical, or economic reason why it must be done on the back of small business.
