Is sickle cell trait harmful?

Not really, there are two different types, the trait as you have asked about and the disease. Sickle Cell disease is much more dangerous, what happens is you’re given two defective genes from your parents that make hemoglobin S instead of the normal ones. So all of your red cells have defective HGB. The red cells also have what is called a sickle shape, and look kind of like a boat. When there is oxygen on the red cells, the cell is okay and can flow through your micro vasculature. The problem arrises when there is a lack of oxygen, such as exercising, or going up in an airplane. The red cells all become sickle and get stuck in your circulatory system, which causes clotting. BUT, in the case of the Sickle cell trait, you only have one bad gene, which means you 50% normal cells and 50% abnormal. There still might be some what of a risk for what they call a vascular crisis (the sickled cells getting caught in the circulatory system) but its less likely and much more manageable. Sickle ce
