Is teaching high school a rewarding career?
First, it’s hard to find jobs in those fields. Second, with a Ph.D., you would be more “expensive” to a district than most new teachers. And, of course, to teach in a high school, you will need the proper education degree, licenses and certifications. Yes, education can be rewarding, but, sadly, what usually happens is you get bogged down in administrative detail, and you are somewhat restricted in what and how you can teach. Also understand that the average teenager is not all that interested in English Literature, History, or World Religion. It’s an uphill battle every day. But, if this is what you feel drawn to, you should do it. Given your credentials, you might want to consider teaching at a college. You don’t need teaching certification for that. Go figure. And, there, a Ph.D. would be considered a desirable asset.
