The American Dental Association recognizes bleaching as the most effective short-term duration treatment in the lightening of tooth color when performed under dental supervision. The bleaching solution can cause teeth to become temporarily temperature sensitive. This goes away within a few days of bleaching completion and no long-term ill effects have been reported. It is important to recognize that whitening will not affect the color of bonded fillings or porcelain crowns, so diagnosis by a dental professional is important.  more

No detrimental side effects of teeth bleaching have been documented. Bleaching does make teeth more sensitive, but that's only temporary. If you think your teeth are too sensitive for bleaching (see sensitive teeth), you should consult a professional to see which teeth bleaching gel or teeth bleaching products you could use.  more

Due to the increase of over the counter teeth whitening products there is an increased fear among users that teeth bleaching may not actually be safe. This fear is often contributed to old techniques from the eighties that did in fact destroy enamel when used in excess. However, recent studies have shown that in current teeth whitening products although there may be slight, temporary, sensitivity side effects, for the most part, teeth whitening products only pose a threat if they are misused or if directions are not heeded. Most over the counter teeth bleaching products contain only a 10% percent concentrate of the active oxidizing agent carbamide peroxide. While it is possible that excessive overuse can result in some damage to teeth, the amount of treatments that one would have to perform on their teeth to reach this level is virtually impossible by any consumer who follows directions.  more

Teeth bleaching material is generally very safe to use. There are many options of teeth whitening. The biggest downside of over the counter bleaching is poor fit. Bleaching gels can run and be swallowed. Professional bleaching trays that are made in a dentist office are custom fitted to your teeth. It comfortably holds the bleach in close contact with your teeth. For best result, a combination of in office bleach (monitored by the dentist) and take home bleach can be done.

I don't think it's very safe. Just brush your teeth and go to the dentist when you have a problem.

I had mine bleached in the late 80's by a dentist for $800 back then.  It was new to the dental industry and a cast was made to create plastic caps to put over my teeth. I wore the caps with the bleach solution daily for the time prescribed.  They came out beautiful but I now have enamel loss and problems with my teeth from the bleach.  More than likely everyone will have enamel problems later on as well.  Was it worth it?   At the time they made me smile!  Now...ouch! Also they stayed white for a while.  Stay away from coffee, and colored drinks to keep them white longer.  I do not have white teeth anymore because they are too sensitive to bleach again.  Hope you have better luck with the new products on the market.
