Broeg, Katja*,1, Steinhagen, Dieter2, Khler, Angela1, 1 Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, Germany-2 School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany- ABSTRACT- In order to answer this question, immature adult flounder were sampled at two differently contaminated sites in the German Bight: (i) the River Elbe estuary, characterised by a wide range of organic pollutants and (ii) Helgoland, a less polluted area. Macrophages were isolated from the head kidney and pooled according to catching site and gender of the fish. Enzyme histochemistry was conducted in living macrophages stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Endpoint enzyme activities of G6PDH, PGDH and acid phosphatase were assessed in stimulated and non-stimulated macrophages and quantified by image analysis. G6PDH and PGDH are NADPH producing enzymes and therefore involved in the cascade of ROS generation by respiratory burst of phagocytes. Stimulation by PMA led to a significant increase
