Is the cheetah population increasing now?
For the first time since the cheetah went on the endangered species list in the early 1970s, it is holding its own in Namibia and may be increasing. The estimated worldwide population is less than 15,000 in at least 26 countries, but in over two-thirds of those countries’ cheetah populations are so small in number and so fragmented that their survival is in question. In Namibia the population has increased from 1990 due to CCF’s efforts, and CCF continues to assist other countries in developing programmes to help save their cheetahs. NB: As of October 2003, it is believed there are 500 more cheetahs in Namibia than previously, a great breakthrough.
