The topic at hand is most definitely the death penalty and the current debate over whether or not it is a deterrent to crime is presently increasingly intense, more so now than during any other time since this form of punishment was briefly suspended in the 1970’s as being extremely unconstitutional. Federal executions such as that of Timothy McVeigh in 2001 and Juan Raul Garzo, a popular drug lord, were the first well-known instances of extreme punishment by authorities since the year 1963 and have certainly intensified both sides of this popular argument. Naturally, supporters of the death penalty believe that capital punishment acts as the best deterrent possible for decreasing instances of crime. Abolitionists however, think that the death penalty is no more of a deterrent than life imprisonment.
