Is the English Department’s internal award (QGS + TA wages) enough to cover tuition and to live on?

It depends. If you’ve got an $800/mo apartment, expensive habits, and fly all the way home to the coast for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and all summer, the answer is No. But if you live frugally, it is indeed possible. If you’re an MA and haven’t been awarded a tuition waiver, you’ll probably need to supplement the internal funding (which altogether amounts to about $11,000, combined QGS and TA money) with savings or student loans (the Ontario Student Assistance Program is the place to start: https://osap.gov.on.ca/eng/eng_osap_main.html). It’s not a good idea to work at another job while doing your degree and TA work. You’ll be busy enough as it is, and, in fact, it’s not even allowed.
