Is the expansion of the universe speeding up or slowing down?

0

Current belief, to the surprise of many, is that the expansion is speeding up. Previous orthodoxy until only a few years ago was that it was slowing down. In order to explain this effect, cosmologists have hypothesized that space is full of an unknown “dark energy” which has a repulsive effect and counteracts the attractive effect of matter.

The universe is slowing down and current theory is incorrect. If we notice that far away objects are receding faster than nearer, therefore, farther back in time objects are moving faster away than more recent in time objects, this would illustrate expansion slowing not speeding up. Not quite sure how scientists still theorize expansion speeding up when logically, knowing larger distance indicates farther back in time, that ancient objects moving away faster, indicates a speeding up expansion.
