An inspector from the Georgia EPA explained that in Georgia, there is no requirement for asbestos to be removed from any structure, unless the asbestos-containing materials are in danger of being disturbed due to demolition. In the event of renovation or other form of major construction, encapsulation and/or abatement may only be necessary in the area affected by the construction or renovation. He further stated that in homes or commercial properties where asbestos exists, the asbestos has NOT been found to pose a threat to those who work or live there. Asbestos exists in the outside air we breath and in the earth we walk on. Many schools have asbestos in them and by regulation, schools must be inspected by the EPA once a year. However, it is not necessary for the asbestos to be removed from the schools unless it has become damaged.
