Is the Government responsible for getting holiday makers home?
Unfortunately, insurance can’t make an ash cloud go away. Yes, it should be the Government’s responsibility to repatriate stranded Brits. I’ve got friends who are stuck in Lanzarote. They should have been home on Friday. There are four adults and two children. Three of the four adults have jobs and the children should have been back at school today. It’s all very well some idiots saying: “I’d love to be stranded somewhere exotic,” but have you any idea of the costs involved? My friends were at the end of their holiday, they’d spent all the money they’d saved for their holiday and everything is now going on credit cards. It’s an unexpected expense they’re very unlikely to be able to recoup. They’ve also got a dog in a kennel in the UK, which is costing more each day than they’ll get in compo from the airline (assuming they get anything from the airline at all.) And, yes, I’ve volunteered to get the dog for them! Mainland Europe is a no-brainer – get yourself to a port and get on a ferry
