October is breast cancer awareness month October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month As a breast cancer survivor who is four years post breast cancer this month is always an emotional one for me. There are so many breast cancer survivors that at time some people may get the idea that no one dies of this disease any more. That is not the case. However, it is true that early detection is one of the best survival tactics. I also have several friends who are in the same boat as I am and I’m sure they would agree with me that one of the best aids to early detection is a yearly mammogram. My breast cancer was only detected by a mammogram. I had missed it in my monthly self-examines and my primary care physician missed it in her annual exam. Luckily my yearly mammogram spotted the strange little grouping of cells that looked like someone had place a mini-dumbell in my right breast. Initially everyone, including my surgeon, thought it was just another benign anomoly but fortunately it was decided
