The California wildfires are posing a serious threat to the historic Mount Wilson Observatory, which was designed by D.H. Burnham & Co, the firm of the great Chicago architect Daniel Burnham. I learned of the observatory’s architectural identity in an email from Tim Samuelson, the indispensable cultural historian of the City of Chicago. Ironically, the 163rd anniversary of Burnham’s birthday is this Friday.
