The D5000 is an emtry level camera and can only auto-focus AF-S and AF-I lenses. AF lenses can be used, however you will have to manually focus those lenses. The D90 is an advacned DSLR that can use all the Nikon AF, AF-I and AF-S lenses made as well as most of the AI lenses if you don’t mind using manual focus lenses These functions alone make the D90 a much more attractive camera. I don’t know who told you that the D90 is hard to use, but it is no more difficult to use than any other fully adjustable camera. If this is your first fully adjustable camera, then the D40 is enough camera for you for the next three to five years as you learn how to use it.
