Is the Olympus is-1000 35mm camera a good one?
That depends. It is a good quality early version of an auto-focus camera that will let you have an inexpensive camera with excellent optics. If you are looking for something to use for one or two courses that focus on the process of film photography it should be quite good. On the other hand if the course instructor is suggesting that you use a camera with interchangeable lenses I would suggest a manual focus 35mm such as Minolta SRT-###, Olympus OM-## or Pentax K1###. All of these cameras are older, are readily available in thrift stores or shops that sell used cameras, inexpensive, primarily mechanical construction and will provide all the manual controls to learn about shutter speeds, aperture and manual camera operation. HTH, Good luck.
