Is the poinsettia still considered to be extremely toxic?
A. The poinsettia was blamed for a death in 1919; however, recent studies indicate that the plant is not as highly toxic as was thought at that time. It is unlikely that ingestion of a poinsettia would be fatal, although it may cause some gastric irritation and burning in the mouth. Some other plants are toxic. If any indoor or outdoor plants are ingested, the Poison Control Center should be contacted or medical advice should be sought.
