Is the Republican Party at its lowest point in modern history?

You have a valid point about the immigration issue. But that notwithstanding, you obviously fail to grasp that the Republican Party was in far worse shape back during the Watergate scandal than it is now. Far worse. After all, Republicans won a greater number of seats (the raw number of seats) in both chambers of Congress in 2006 than it did at any point during the 1970s. And Nixon was far more unpopular right before his resignation than Bush is now. Republicans still continue to have majority control of a number of state legislatures, even in the states where they took a noticable drubbing last year (Ohio and Pennsylvania, for example). And James Traficant (D-OH) was the only member of Congress in recent memory who not only was convicted of multiple felonies, but got expelled from Congress.
