Is the TCP/IP protocol as its name implies, only an Internet protocol?
TCP/IP is actually two distinct protocols that work together: TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and IP stands for Internet Protocol. They work at different “layers” in the communications protocol “stack” that facilitates communications between different computer networks – also known as “internetworking”. TCP/IP is not just used on the public Internet – it is also used on private (corporate and home) networks as well since it is BY FAR the most commonly used internetworking protocol. There are also a plethera of standard (lookup IEEE or IETF) and proprietary (networking equipment vendor-specific) protocols that are used in various networking situations.
