Is the The National Hurricane Center currently monitoring any storms which could become hurricanes?
Hurricane season has begun in the Atlantic Ocean, with the first named storm heading towards the West Indies. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Ana formed about 1,600 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Forecasters said the storm is heading west at 26 kilometers per hour and could reach those islands by Monday. They warned the storm may pick up strength on its way. Meanwhile, the Pacific has already seen Hurricane Guillermo become a major hurricane. Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center said Guillermo’s maximum sustained winds had increased to nearly 185 kilometers per hour. The Center reports Guillermo is far from land, moving well off Mexico’s Pacific coast westward at 26 kilometers per hour. Forecasters say the storm will now weaken as it moves over cooler waters.
